What is Prolotherapy?

Prolotherapy (short for “proliferative therapy”) is a simple medical procedure that gently stimulates the body to heal the underlying causes of many types of chronic pain.    It involves injections into and around the source of the pain.

Prolotherapy uses a combination of homeopathic and natural medications that are quite safe.   Most people require 3-6 treatments for optimum and long-lasting results. Some people may need follow-up injections at periodic intervals depending on the nature of their lifestyles and physical demands placed on their bodies.

Prolotherapy can also be done using ozone gas.  Ozone is a special form of oxygen.  It is produced right in the office immediately prior to use.  Ozone has many of the healing properties of the injection formula.  In our experience most people have best results using the injection formula for the first and second treatments, then ozone for any further follow-up treatments.

Prolotherapy:

  • is a very gentle and safe procedure.
  • has very long-lasting benefits.
  • has virtually no medical side-effects.
  • is often an excellent alternative to surgery.
  • is not drug therapy.
  • is affordable.

For many pain conditions the use prolotherapy is an excellent choice that has usually has outstanding results.  Due to the consistent successes enjoyed by most patients, prolotherapy is also called “non-surgical joint reconstruction”.

Dr. Schwengel uses Osteopathic Manual Medicine to help locate and identify the specific structures in and around joints that may be weakened from injury or overuse.  Carefully placed injections precisely “hit the spot” where the pain is coming from.  The body responds to the injection by growing small bits of scar tissue where the medication was injected.  This helps stabilize and strengthen the area.  Increase stability of a joint means decreased pain.  Other benefits include greater strength and flexibility of the treated area.

There are virtually no side effects of prolotherapy.  As with any medical treatment, careful evaluation beforehand is necessary to confirm the source of the pain and to be sure it is safe to do prolotherapy treatments.  Most people return to work or their daily routine immediately after their prolotherapy session.
